Injury alert! Mahmudullah suffers Grade 1 calf tear

Bangladesh’s senior batsman Mahmudullah reportedly suffered a Grade 1 tear in his right calf muscle while batting in the match against Afghanistan at Southampton on Monday. The batsman appeared to be visibly discomforted throughout his scratchy innings of 27 in 38 balls. He did not take the field during Afghanistan’s batting.

“The scan results showed a Grade-1 tear on Riyad’s right calf,” Mahmud told The Daily Star. “At the moment, that is all I can say as I have not spoken to the physio [Thihan Chandramohan] yet. I can tell you more about the recovery period in the morning after speaking to the physio.”

Bangladesh’s next match is against unbeaten India on July 2, seven days after their 62-run win over against Afghanistan. Mahmudullah’s absence could well affect the team’s performance, especially after how the side has managed to keep their World Cup dream alive. They will have to win all of their remaining matches and hope for other results to go their way.

“Mahmudullah has sustained a low grade calf injury. We will monitor his progress over the next few days with regards to his availability for the next World Cup match,” said Bangladesh Physio Thihan Chandramohan on Tuesday.
