IPL 2021: KKR captain Eoin Morgan fined for slow over-rate in match against CSK

With an aim to curb slow over rates in the IPL, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made it mandatory for all teams to complete their quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes (including the five minutes of strategic timeouts) ahead of the start of the 14th edition.

Over the years, this has been the most common breach of the IPL’s Code of Conduct with matches going up to over an hour than the stipulated time. To penalise the same, BCCI had decided to slap a penalty of INR 12 Lakh on the captain of the guilty team for the first offence, while a fine of INR 24 Lakh is decided for the second offence. On being repeated for the third time, the captain will be handed a one-match suspension apart from a monetary fine of INR 30 Lakh.

To ensure that the penalty does not only go against the captain of the team, the BCCI kept a provision of fining each member of the IPL team with a sum of INR 6 Lakh or 25% of the match fee, whichever is lesser. For any subsequent offence regarding slow over rate, each member of the team will be fined a sum of INR 12 Lakh or 50% of the match fee, whichever is lesser.

Eoin Morgan fined for slow over rate against CSK

While CSK skipper MS Dhoni was the first one to be imposed with the fine after his side was found guilty for maintaining a slow over rate against DC, KKR skipper Eoin Morgan is the latest one to face the penalty.

KKR’s first offence in the league was during their encounter against CSK on Wednesday. Given this was the first instance, their skipper has been docked INR 12 Lakh.

To add more to the agony, Morgan’s side lost the game by 18 runs after CSK had set them a massive target of 221. During the chase, they were reduced to 31/5 at one stage. Although, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, and Dinesh Karthik turned things around before Dhoni’s men dismissed them for 202.
