Bravo, Pollard named as reserves by West Indies for the World Cup

West Indies have named a list of 10 players in the reserves for the upcoming 2019 World Cup with Dwayne Bravo being the surprise inclusion. Kieron Pollard has also been named in the reserves after not making it to the 15-man squad.

The inclusion of Bravo is particularly surprising, as the 35-year-old all-rounder announced his retirement from international cricket last year. Bravo last played for the Windies in 2016 in a T20I against Pakistan and has not played an ODI match for more than four years. He has had a number of issues and disputes with the cricket board, which played a big role in him announcing his retirement from international cricket. Bravo could now fly out to England in case of an injury to a player during the tournament.

The other players who have been named among the reserves are John Campbell, Sunil Ambris, Roston Chase, Jonathan Carter, Shane Dowrich, Keemo Paul, Raymon Reifer and Kharry Pierre. Ambris and Reifer have already joined up with the squad as their training camp has already begun in Southampton.

Speaking on the selection of reserves, interim chairman of selectors, Robert Haynes said in a statement:

“The choice of players in the reserve list is to really cover our bases and ensure we have a good balance in the pool of players that can be selected if replacements are required. We think the skill set in this pool is strong with a good blend of experience and upcoming young players who can be ready to contribute when required.”
