Ashes 2021-22: Marnus Labuschagne weirdly gets out to Stuart Broad

Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t faced a dip in form ever since he replaced Steve Smith as a concussion substitute during the 2019 Ashes Test at the Lord’s. In the ongoing five-match Test series against England, the right-hander hasn’t flattered to deceive one bit. The youngster has given an account of his stupendous self after scoring his maiden Ashes Test century at the Adelaide Oval.

The Aussies are currently taking part in the fifth and final Test in a Day-Night affair at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Labuschagne had a massive task in hand since the hosts were reduced to 12 for three in 9.5 overs. From there on, the right-hander scored 44 runs off 53 balls with the help of nine fours and played at an incredible strike rate of 83.01 while facing the pink ball.

Marnus Labuschagne gets himself in a tangle

However, he got out in a rather bizarre manner. Stuart Broad, England’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, got rid of the big fish in the 23rd over of the innings. The 35-year-old Broad churned out a full-length delivery and Labuschagne tried to play the ball on the leg side.

But the batter completely lost balance and couldn’t stay in position to play the stroke with precision. Subsequently, Labuschagne was bowled around his legs. It was an important breakthrough for the Brits as Marnus and Travis Head had stitched together a partnership of 71 runs.

After being put in to bat first, the home team found themselves in all sorts of strife. Ollie Robinson removed David Warner, who failed to open his account in 22 balls, to start the carnage. Thereafter, he got rid of Steve Smith, who also couldn’t get off the mark. Broad inflicted more mayhem for the hosts after he removed Usman Khawaja, who scored back-to-backs tons in the SCG Test.

For England, Mark Wood leaked runs a bit as he went for 31 in three overs at a rate of 10.33. Chris Woakes also made a comeback into the eleven. Australia have already sealed the fate of the five-match series after winning the games in Brisbane, Adelaide, and Melbourne.
